2MORROW

We seek tomorrow as salvation
Written[ Expression ]

I figured I'd share a few of my poems with you. I haven't posted any in a while.
T I M E.
I need to get back in touch with my soul
The world has been so cold.
Heavy like gold
My young heart seems so old.
It takes time
to love and to live
Time.
to feel and to touch and to
hear and to see
and to forgive.
Time has slipped through the
spaces between my fingers
like pebbles of sand.
Time
has taught me to cry
Time
has taught me to laugh
Time has made me lose my soul
while the world bitterly cold
my young heart so old
sold
The weight of time-
heavy like gold.
Things Have Been So Crazy and Hectic....
Time is slowly winding down and so is Summer! I've let a whole month and a couple weeks slip away without blogging. I don't know if I've been too busy or too tired. Or maybe I just didn't have much to say. I really don't have much to say now either lol But the most important thing is that i'm cherishing life and embracing love.

Before You Judge Me, Try Hard to Love Me.
It has been a yr since the passing of Michael Jackson. I wrote this in tribute to him..Every now and then, I find myself missing those hot summers when I would ride in the backseat of my parents’ car, bobbing my head to the Thriller album on my ruby red CD player. Perhaps I first became star struck in kindergarten when my music teacher showed the class Michael’s debut film, The Wiz. Or maybe, it could have been a couple years before then when I first watched the TV movie, The Jacksons: An American Dream. Whatever the case may be, from the moment I laid eyes on Michael Jackson, I was in awe.
I remember being a young girl, in my aunts living room (avoiding the fact that I was punished), gazing at the television as Michael performed You are Not Alone (My favorite Michael Jackson song at the time). I tried my best to act cool, as if I did not want to hop in the TV set and accompany him on stage. By the age of ten, I guess you could have called me a MJ fanatic. A lot of my friends thought I was crazy to be listening to Michael instead of the popular artists at the time. But in Michael’s music, I found true meaning and talent.
By the age of twenty five, Michael’s career and stardom had already reached its pinnacle. And the more successful he became, the more others were out to see his demise. As Michael grew from ‘little Michael Jackson from the Jackson Five’ to the 80’s sex symbol to the 90’s King of Pop, he later became ‘Wacko Jacko’ of the 2000’s. Every time I hear the senseless name ‘Wacko Jacko’ I want to gag. It goes to show how the media will turn its back on you in a flash. However, I never turned my back on Michael. As Michael later became the joke of everyone’s conversation, I would defend him as if he were my own big brother. To me, Michael was like my own fictional big brother; He was my inspiration, and someone I looked up to.
It made me sick to know that people could not just accept talent for what it was and leave the man in the mirror, out of the picture. Others were so judgmental about a man who they knew nothing about. Did the media care that Michael had Vitiligo? —which is the reason behind his drastic change in complexion—of course not. Forgive me; they pretended to care, after his death. Did the media consider the fact that Michael’s lack of childhood and unnecessary abuse as a child triggered his need for escapism in a world that he called Neverland? I understood, at a very early age, the meaning behind each invisible scar. Michael was not insane, the people drove him crazy.
Do you remember that morning when you stared for hours in the mirror at the pimple that appeared on your face over night? How did you feel? I can assume that you were either embarrassed or nonchalant. Now imagine that you had ten more of those pesky pimples, and you were scheduled to do a meet and great with a thousand of your fans who followed your every move since you were nine years old. How would you have felt if at the meet and greet people said “ew,” and demanded to see the cute, little kid that they knew and loved. You would most likely feel insecure about yourself, I’m sure. Well that is the story of MJ. Michael was a perfectionist. He wanted his fans to be entertained, and to be taken to their own personal fantasy world, through his performances. In no way did Michael want to disappoint his fans, even if it meant changing the way he looked.
While we all lived normal lives, Michael lived a lonely life. Granted he could buy all the friends in the world, but as we later came to find out in the cause of his death, Michael’s advantage of money was the root of all evil. In his mid twenties, when most guys were adding and dropping girls out of their little black book, from left to right, Michael was at home writing music or wishing for that life. In a 1980’s interview, Michael stated that he did not have any real friends outside of the music business. However, he did name superstars such as Diana Ross and Quincy Jones as his friends and confidants. These friends were twice Michael’s age. Michael was clearly a shy person, although you would have never known if you were to only go off of his live acts and performances. Michael was lonely and timid. His voice was faint, and nearly inaudible. His eyes told a story that no one wanted to hear, or see for that matter. People questioned everything that Michael did. They questioned Michael’s relationships, his children, and his sexuality, but did they ever question his talent? Never. Michael was a force to be reckoned with, and because his entertainment skills were flawless, there was nothing to critique but Michael himself.
Michael faced several accusations of child molestation, during his life. All of the accusations were dropped, and appeared to be untrue. However, many seem to ignorantly think differently. These accusations really hurt Michael because of his love for children. While Michael was being accused of child molestation, no one stopped to recognize his work as an outstanding philanthropist, as he saved children’s lives. After those trials, it was evident that Michael was hurting inside, and it took up until his death for people to realize it.
On June 25, 2009, I received a phone call from my best friend who knew that I was an extreme Michael Jackson fan, while I was over a friend’s house. Over the phone, she said to me, as her voice trembled, “Imani, Michael Jackson died.” I couldn’t cry because my first instinct was to not believe her, so to calm myself down, I told her that I would call her back. My heart pounded, when I considered the fact that Michael could have actually died. Immediately after, my phone was flooded with phone calls and text messages with mixed messages that Michael was , indeed, still alive, or that he had passed. It was not until thirty minutes later when I finally went home, and was greeted with scrolling breaking news that read “Michael Jackson has died.” I dropped everything I had in my hands and my tears drenched my face. It was like taking a bullet. For weeks, I was in shock, and in mourning. It hurt to listen to his music, but at the same time it was like therapy. To this day, when I listen to Michael Jackson songs, I feel his spirit in each lyric. It is like he lives in his music. Now the whole world hears you, Michael; you are not alone.

What is the future of a young black girl#HappyBirthdayTupac

Here's a excerpt from a Tupac essay[ His Poetic Justice] I wrote for my Non Fiction writing class:
Through his advocating eyes, he saw the world in a different light. And that is what I most respect. I loved the fact that he was not afraid to be a sensitive writer. He was brave enough to enlighten his culture and dedicate himself to the betterment of the black community. While watching “Tupac: Resurrection,” in an interview, Tupac spoke about what he thought the school curriculum should include. He said, “There should be classes on drugs, sex education, and police brutality. But instead we have classes on gym- physical education.” At an age when most boys indulged in drugs, sex and violence, Tupac wanted to make children aware of these delusions of being cool.
Listening to him speak, made me feel as though I was listening to a young Martin Luther or Malcolm X. His intelligence and philosophy was bigger than himself. The world was not ready which is why I believe is the reason he died. As the weight of the world and enemies began to become a burden, Tupac realized that he would not be on this earth for long. His lyrics and poems reflected his haunted feelings. In his infamous poem, “In the event of my demise”, he says, “I will die before my time/because I feel the shadow’s depth…” It was an alarming premonition but for some reason, we knew he was right. He knew he was right.
On September 13, 1996, ironically, an advocate for peace, love, equality and poetry would be violently murdered at the tender age of 25; an age where he remained to be mentally imprisoned- trapped between right and wrong and love and hate. This rebellious man was misunderstood and only judged by his actions. But I understand him. The more I studied Tupac, the more I was able to see our connection; a connection far deeper than us living in the same the city. We were alike; both finding outlets through poetry to express our deepest thoughts and feelings. Being two different people with the same complex minds, I found that both Tupac and I admire the art of thinking, learning and creating our own philosophies. I am intrigued by his paradoxical way of living. In “Tupac: Resurrection,” he proudly said, “Some people see Tupac as a poet, and some see me as a Thug. I’m a Gemini, I have two sides. "

FUNNIEST THING.
"The Style and Elegance of Audrey Hepburn"
With my eyes glued to the stunning poster of Audrey Hepburn plastered on my bedroom wall, I immediately think ‘wow what a woman!’ Hepburn was one of a kind. She was a humble icon who even considered herself to have a “funny face” while others found her flawless. What truly stands out to me about Audrey Hepburn is her naturalness. She was never one to touch drugs or even have the desire. She was simply Audrey—the petite, radiant girl from next door. With the poise that she acquired after years of ballet training, Audrey worked her way in the graceful manner.
Audrey Hepburn was the type of actress that was able to forget it was her that was on the screen, and draw the audience into the character that she portrayed. That is a gift. From her raw, cockney speaking role as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady to her adventurous and imaginative role as Gabrielle Simpson in Paris When it Sizzles, Hepburn had the talent to create a place in each of our hearts.
Besides her enchanting acting talent, Hepburn is most known for her classic and timeless style. She has made fashions such as the chic black dress that can be found worn in her film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the high waist Capri and long pants that she wears in Roman Holiday popular and wanted by every girl—young and old. Audrey Hepburn was the ultimate show stopper. Hepburn’s fashion style was inspired by designer, Hubert de Givenchy. Givenchy and Hepburn became lifelong friends and she declared him as her favorite designer after providing the jaw dropping gowns and dresses for her 1954 film, Sabrina. Givenchy proclaimed Hepburn his muse.
In an environment where several glamorous stars sit on their high horses, Hepburn remained selfless. She was extremely passionate about donating to UNICEF. Hepburn wanted to do all that she could to prevent the deaths of helpless children. She was able to travel to several different locations such as Turkey, South America, Sudan and Somalia to visit children in need and contribute to UNICEF. Hepburn dedicated her time and love to these needy children until the final days of her life in 1993.
“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” Such words can only be spoken by a woman of pure class and wisdom. Audrey Hepburn was the epitome of elegance and class. Exuberating child-like charm and filled with explosive energy, Audrey Hepburn has taught us to live life for its precious moments. She has showed us how to smile not only with our eyes but with our hearts. Her integrity is what made her one of the best. Hepburn did not fake her way to the top, nor did she lose herself in the midst of her success. Not only should we attempt to dress like Audrey Hepburn, but we all should imitate her grace and sophistication.

excerpt from "A Substitute For You"- Nikki G.
Featured Poet: Nikki Giovanni

Like a fading piece of cloth I am a failure No longer do I cover tables filled with food and laughter My seams are frayed my hems falling my strength no longer able To hold the hot and cold I wish for those first days When just woven I could keep water From seeping through Repelled stains with the tightness of my weave Dazzled the sunlight with my Reflection I grow old though pleased with my memories The tasks I can no longer complete Are balanced by the love of the tasks gone past I offer no apology only this plea: When I am frayed and strained and drizzle at the end Please someone cut a square and put me in a quilt That I might keep some child warm And some old person with no one else to talk to Will hear my whispers And cuddle near |

Black College Experience
One of my happiest moments this year was when TV1 began to re- air A Different World. I've always loved this show even more than the Cosby Show because it was something I could connect with at my age. Of course, I was too young to think of college when I watched the late 90s/early 00s reruns but seeing young black kids in college was very inspiring. It was A Different World that instilled the idea of going to a HBCU in my mind.I chose to attend an HBCU ( Hampton University) because I thought that there would be nothing like attending an all black college. Some people think that I'm living in a fantasy world because an all black college is not good preparation for the "real world." Well I'm sorry, I just thought I was living in the real world all of my life. You know, the real world when blacks couldn't even attend college. You remember, the real world when we were only considered slaves and not human beings.
Therefore, I find it very prideful and a bit revolutionary to
attend a HBCU. For so long black people have been called inferior and now that we do get a higher education together, we aren't realistic. We'll never win. Well no. I take that back. We've already won. So thanks A Different World for inspiring me and all of the other HBCU students and Alumni.
edge. of. desire.
a sudden sound of desire
leaps
quietly through the rushing wind
it is my heart's beat.
have you heard it?
do you hear?
or are you tuning it out
as it circles through your head.
tossing and turning in your bed
it is calling for you.
yes, I know.
I heard yours calling mine too.

Watching History Unfold.

President Obama chosen to speak at Hampton University Commencement
President Barack Obama has agreed to speak at Hampton University’s 2010 commencement. President Obama was eager to speak at a HBCU commencement this year and once the news was released, 18 HBCUs reached out to the President with letters expressing their desire for him to speak at their college.
Out of the 18 HBCUs, the list was narrowed down to three colleges and Hampton University was selected as the lucky university. The campus is extremely eager to welcome President Obama to the University. Hampton University’s President, William R. Harvey, is preparing for the large mass of people that will be in need of a commencement ticket.
Already, the school is buzzing with excitement and hundreds of students are plotting ways to receive the ‘golden ticket.’ Hampton University’s 140th commencement will be held at the campus’ Armstrong Stadium on May 9, 2010.

I LOVE THE 80's! Spotlight
As the title implies, I absolutely love the 80's! I think the 80's was one of the best eras with the most vibrant fashions, futuristic and energetic music and of course a culture that any high spirited teenager would love to grow up in. Viva La Glam Campaign
80's Icon, Cyndi Lauper , and modern day superstar, Lady Gaga, both team up for a great campaign of HIV/AIDS awareness for women. The two glamorous ladies are spreading this powerful message by working with MAC cosmetics and creating different shades of lipstick that women can purchase and the proceeds will be go to the cause. Both Gaga and Lauper agree that when women wear this lipstick that they will be reminded to be very careful and protected against HIV/AIDS. What a great campaign! Cyndi Lauper and GaGa are a great pair working for this important cause. Buy your Viva La Glam Mac Lipstick today!

To Make You Feel My Love..

When the rain
Is blowing in your face
And the whole world
Is on your case
I could offer you
A warm embrace
To make you feel my love
When the evening shadows
And the stars appear
And there is no one there
To dry your tears
I could hold you
For a million years
To make you feel my love
I know you
Haven't made
Your mind up yet
But I would never
Do you wrong
I've known it
From the moment
That we met
No doubt in my mind
Where you belong
I'd go hungry
I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling
Down the avenue
No, there's nothing
That I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love
The storms are raging
On the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
Though winds of change
Are throwing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing
Like me yet
I could make you happy
Make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends
Of the Earth for you
To make you feel my love
JENNIFER HUDSON IS ONE OF MY TOP INFLUENCES
GRAMMY AWARDS 2010
AS YOU ALL SHOULD KNOW BY NOW, I LOVE TALENT AS WELL AS ENTERTAINMENT. THEREFORE, THE GRAMMY AWARDS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE AWARD SHOWS BECAUSE IT HIGHLIGHTS SOME OF THE BEST MUSICAL ARTIST OF THE PAST YEAR. I THOUGHT THIS YEAR'S GRAMMY AWARDS SHOW WENT PRETTY WELL. TAYLOR SWIFT CONTINUED TO BE OVERRATED AND RECEIVED THREE GRAMMY AWARDS HOWEVER, BEYONCE MADE HISTORY BY BEING THE FIRST WOMAN TO WIN 6 GRAMMYS IN ONE NIGHT. QUITE CLOSE TO MICHAEL JACKSON WHO WON 8 GRAMMYS IN ONE NIGHT ( 7 FOR HIS THRILLER ALBUM AND 1 FOR HIS E.T. STORYBOOK ALBUM). WAY TO GO BEYONCE!
PINK'S PERFORMANCE WAS STUNNING. AS YOU CAN SEE SHE SUNG WHILE DOING ACROBATICS IN THE AIR, WHILE DRIPPING WET AND REMAINED TO SOUND FLAWLESS!

OFCOURSE LADY GAGA WAS PURE ENTERTAINMENT AS WELL. WITH A SURPRISE DUET WITH ELTON JOHN, GAGA HAD THE WORLD IN HER HANDS, ONCE AGAIN! I LOVED HOW SHE BEGAN HER PERFORMANCE WITH SPEECHLESS, A GREAT BALLAD AND ENDED THE PERFORMANCE WITH THE TWO GRAND PIANOS WITH SEVERAL MONSTERS CREEPING FROM THEM. GAGA IS AWESOME!

AND FINALLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOMENTS WAS THE TRIBUTE TO THE GREAT MICHAEL JACKSON. WITH THE HELP OF JENNIFER HUDSON, USHER, CELINE DION, SMOKEY ROBINSON AND CARRIE UNDERWOOD AND THE RECORDING OF MICHAEL'S CHILLING AND POWERFUL VOICE, THE AUDIENCE WAS ABLE TO BE AMAZED WITH A 3D SPECTACULAR OF MJ'S EARTH SONG . MY ONLY PROBLEM WITH THIS SEGMENT IS THAT I WISH IT WERE LONGER. BUT NONE THE LESS IT WAS STILL AMAZING! ALSO I THOUGHT IT WAS AWESOME THAT HIS CHILDREN- PARIS AND PRINCE JACKSON- WERE ABLE TO ACCEPT THE AWARD FOR THEIR FATHER. AFTER ALL, THEY WERE THE MAIN REASON WHY MJ WANTED TO MAKE HIS COMEBACK IN THE FIRST PLACE.

If it’s magic- Stevie Wonder ...beautiful lyrics
If it’s magic
then why can’t it be everlasting
like the sun that always shine,
like the poets endless rhyme
like the galaxy of time.
If it’s pleasing
then why can’t it be never leaving
like the day that never fails
like on sea shores there are shells
like the time that always tell
It holds the key to every heart
throughout the universe.
It feels you up without a bite
and quenches every thirst.
So if its special
then with it why aren’t we as careful
as making sure we dress in style
posing pictures with a smile
keeping danger from a child.

Twilight.
So I’m clearly late hoppin’ on the reading rainbow but I decided to read Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight”(the first of a four part series). The book was absolutely amazing and very well written I might add. Vampire stories never captivated me but with the incorporated twist of romance, Meyer caught my attention. I finished the book last night and today I went on You Tube to watch the movie. Sadly, I was rather disappointed because this is the movie that made me want to read the book. They always say the book is better than the movie- they’re absolutely right! I thought that maybe I’d just read Twilight and watch the movies for the rest of the series but now that I see how they made the movie stray away partly from the book, I feel like I’m going to be cheated out of a storyline.
Now don’t get me wrong- the movie was great! (if you have never read the book). But since I did follow the rules just this once, I found that a lot of scenes that were vital to me in the book was not added into the movie script. I think a lot of the romance and important conversations between Edward and Bella were described much more beautifully in the book and weren’t as rushed as the movie made it seem. The characters in the movie did an awesome job, however the movie plot kind of strayed away from the book. So i guess you can only have one or the other. But I assure you, if you “loooved” the movie Twilight and you don’t mind reading a 490 or so page book then I invite you to read the series. You’ll fall deeper in love.
