One of my happiest moments this year was when TV1 began to re- air A Different World. I've always loved this show even more than the Cosby Show because it was something I could connect with at my age. Of course, I was too young to think of college when I watched the late 90s/early 00s reruns but seeing young black kids in college was very inspiring. It was A Different World that instilled the idea of going to a HBCU in my mind.I chose to attend an HBCU ( Hampton University) because I thought that there would be nothing like attending an all black college. Some people think that I'm living in a fantasy world because an all black college is not good preparation for the "real world." Well I'm sorry, I just thought I was living in the real world all of my life. You know, the real world when blacks couldn't even attend college. You remember, the real world when we were only considered slaves and not human beings.
Therefore, I find it very prideful and a bit revolutionary to
attend a HBCU. For so long black people have been called inferior and now that we do get a higher education together, we aren't realistic. We'll never win. Well no. I take that back. We've already won. So thanks A Different World for inspiring me and all of the other HBCU students and Alumni.
