Before You Judge Me, Try Hard to Love Me.

It has been a yr since the passing of Michael Jackson. I wrote this in tribute to him..

Every now and then, I find myself missing those hot summers when I would ride in the backseat of my parents’ car, bobbing my head to the Thriller album on my ruby red CD player. Perhaps I first became star struck in kindergarten when my music teacher showed the class Michael’s debut film, The Wiz. Or maybe, it could have been a couple years before then when I first watched the TV movie, The Jacksons: An American Dream. Whatever the case may be, from the moment I laid eyes on Michael Jackson, I was in awe.

I remember being a young girl, in my aunts living room (avoiding the fact that I was punished), gazing at the television as Michael performed You are Not Alone (My favorite Michael Jackson song at the time). I tried my best to act cool, as if I did not want to hop in the TV set and accompany him on stage. By the age of ten, I guess you could have called me a MJ fanatic. A lot of my friends thought I was crazy to be listening to Michael instead of the popular artists at the time. But in Michael’s music, I found true meaning and talent.

By the age of twenty five, Michael’s career and stardom had already reached its pinnacle. And the more successful he became, the more others were out to see his demise. As Michael grew from ‘little Michael Jackson from the Jackson Five’ to the 80’s sex symbol to the 90’s King of Pop, he later became ‘Wacko Jacko’ of the 2000’s. Every time I hear the senseless name ‘Wacko Jacko’ I want to gag. It goes to show how the media will turn its back on you in a flash. However, I never turned my back on Michael. As Michael later became the joke of everyone’s conversation, I would defend him as if he were my own big brother. To me, Michael was like my own fictional big brother; He was my inspiration, and someone I looked up to.

It made me sick to know that people could not just accept talent for what it was and leave the man in the mirror, out of the picture. Others were so judgmental about a man who they knew nothing about. Did the media care that Michael had Vitiligo? —which is the reason behind his drastic change in complexion—of course not. Forgive me; they pretended to care, after his death. Did the media consider the fact that Michael’s lack of childhood and unnecessary abuse as a child triggered his need for escapism in a world that he called Neverland? I understood, at a very early age, the meaning behind each invisible scar. Michael was not insane, the people drove him crazy.

Do you remember that morning when you stared for hours in the mirror at the pimple that appeared on your face over night? How did you feel? I can assume that you were either embarrassed or nonchalant. Now imagine that you had ten more of those pesky pimples, and you were scheduled to do a meet and great with a thousand of your fans who followed your every move since you were nine years old. How would you have felt if at the meet and greet people said “ew,” and demanded to see the cute, little kid that they knew and loved. You would most likely feel insecure about yourself, I’m sure. Well that is the story of MJ. Michael was a perfectionist. He wanted his fans to be entertained, and to be taken to their own personal fantasy world, through his performances. In no way did Michael want to disappoint his fans, even if it meant changing the way he looked.

While we all lived normal lives, Michael lived a lonely life. Granted he could buy all the friends in the world, but as we later came to find out in the cause of his death, Michael’s advantage of money was the root of all evil. In his mid twenties, when most guys were adding and dropping girls out of their little black book, from left to right, Michael was at home writing music or wishing for that life. In a 1980’s interview, Michael stated that he did not have any real friends outside of the music business. However, he did name superstars such as Diana Ross and Quincy Jones as his friends and confidants. These friends were twice Michael’s age. Michael was clearly a shy person, although you would have never known if you were to only go off of his live acts and performances. Michael was lonely and timid. His voice was faint, and nearly inaudible. His eyes told a story that no one wanted to hear, or see for that matter. People questioned everything that Michael did. They questioned Michael’s relationships, his children, and his sexuality, but did they ever question his talent? Never. Michael was a force to be reckoned with, and because his entertainment skills were flawless, there was nothing to critique but Michael himself.

Michael faced several accusations of child molestation, during his life. All of the accusations were dropped, and appeared to be untrue. However, many seem to ignorantly think differently. These accusations really hurt Michael because of his love for children. While Michael was being accused of child molestation, no one stopped to recognize his work as an outstanding philanthropist, as he saved children’s lives. After those trials, it was evident that Michael was hurting inside, and it took up until his death for people to realize it.

On June 25, 2009, I received a phone call from my best friend who knew that I was an extreme Michael Jackson fan, while I was over a friend’s house. Over the phone, she said to me, as her voice trembled, “Imani, Michael Jackson died.” I couldn’t cry because my first instinct was to not believe her, so to calm myself down, I told her that I would call her back. My heart pounded, when I considered the fact that Michael could have actually died. Immediately after, my phone was flooded with phone calls and text messages with mixed messages that Michael was , indeed, still alive, or that he had passed. It was not until thirty minutes later when I finally went home, and was greeted with scrolling breaking news that read “Michael Jackson has died.” I dropped everything I had in my hands and my tears drenched my face. It was like taking a bullet. For weeks, I was in shock, and in mourning. It hurt to listen to his music, but at the same time it was like therapy. To this day, when I listen to Michael Jackson songs, I feel his spirit in each lyric. It is like he lives in his music. Now the whole world hears you, Michael; you are not alone.

Black.Girl.Future.

What is the future of a young black girl
who falls into the pit of this hollow black world?

Does she cry at night, with hopes to see a new tomorrow? Or does she rebel against the idea of happiness and dwell in sorrow.

What is the future of young black girl who has pride the size of a mustard seed. She feels ignored because no one cares about what she needs.

She searches for a way-for a light at the end of the tunnel, but as the days progress, she sees the light less. A hopeless lost treasure is what she will turn out to be.

What is the future of a young black girl
who's mother has done all that she can,
who's father wishes he could,
who's brother is buried ten blocks away,
who's sister is misunderstood?

Does this girl even have a future?
Will she ever find her way?
If you see this young black girl
grab her hand and ensure that in God's hands she will stay.

#HappyBirthdayTupac

Here's a excerpt from a Tupac essay[ His Poetic Justice] I wrote for my Non Fiction writing class:

Through his advocating eyes, he saw the world in a different light. And that is what I most respect. I loved the fact that he was not afraid to be a sensitive writer. He was brave enough to enlighten his culture and dedicate himself to the betterment of the black community. While watching “Tupac: Resurrection,” in an interview, Tupac spoke about what he thought the school curriculum should include. He said, “There should be classes on drugs, sex education, and police brutality. But instead we have classes on gym- physical education.” At an age when most boys indulged in drugs, sex and violence, Tupac wanted to make children aware of these delusions of being cool.

Listening to him speak, made me feel as though I was listening to a young Martin Luther or Malcolm X. His intelligence and philosophy was bigger than himself. The world was not ready which is why I believe is the reason he died. As the weight of the world and enemies began to become a burden, Tupac realized that he would not be on this earth for long. His lyrics and poems reflected his haunted feelings. In his infamous poem, “In the event of my demise”, he says, “I will die before my time/because I feel the shadow’s depth…” It was an alarming premonition but for some reason, we knew he was right. He knew he was right.

On September 13, 1996, ironically, an advocate for peace, love, equality and poetry would be violently murdered at the tender age of 25; an age where he remained to be mentally imprisoned- trapped between right and wrong and love and hate. This rebellious man was misunderstood and only judged by his actions. But I understand him. The more I studied Tupac, the more I was able to see our connection; a connection far deeper than us living in the same the city. We were alike; both finding outlets through poetry to express our deepest thoughts and feelings. Being two different people with the same complex minds, I found that both Tupac and I admire the art of thinking, learning and creating our own philosophies. I am intrigued by his paradoxical way of living. In “Tupac: Resurrection,” he proudly said, “Some people see Tupac as a poet, and some see me as a Thug. I’m a Gemini, I have two sides. "

FUNNIEST THING.

So later on today or yesterday (its after 12am), I received a letter from Vogue in regards to the Talent Contest ( where the Audrey Hepburn piece below was sent to), and unfortunately I did not win. But I am so happy and honored to have a Vogue letter addressed to me from London =] LOL.

I am just proud of myself for even trying. The contest is for writers under 25, so I have 5 yrs to keep submitting.

And just to think, I was one of the millions of writers around the WORLD whose essay Vogue editors read, and said that they enjoyed.

Life is about passion-not fame.

Style.

"The Style and Elegance of Audrey Hepburn"

So I entered this highly competitive writing competition for Vogue, and here is one of the pieces I wrote. Enjoy.

With my eyes glued to the stunning poster of Audrey Hepburn plastered on my bedroom wall, I immediately think ‘wow what a woman!’ Hepburn was one of a kind. She was a humble icon who even considered herself to have a “funny face” while others found her flawless. What truly stands out to me about Audrey Hepburn is her naturalness. She was never one to touch drugs or even have the desire. She was simply Audrey—the petite, radiant girl from next door. With the poise that she acquired after years of ballet training, Audrey worked her way in the graceful manner.

Audrey Hepburn was the type of actress that was able to forget it was her that was on the screen, and draw the audience into the character that she portrayed. That is a gift. From her raw, cockney speaking role as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady to her adventurous and imaginative role as Gabrielle Simpson in Paris When it Sizzles, Hepburn had the talent to create a place in each of our hearts.

Besides her enchanting acting talent, Hepburn is most known for her classic and timeless style. She has made fashions such as the chic black dress that can be found worn in her film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the high waist Capri and long pants that she wears in Roman Holiday popular and wanted by every girl—young and old. Audrey Hepburn was the ultimate show stopper. Hepburn’s fashion style was inspired by designer, Hubert de Givenchy. Givenchy and Hepburn became lifelong friends and she declared him as her favorite designer after providing the jaw dropping gowns and dresses for her 1954 film, Sabrina. Givenchy proclaimed Hepburn his muse.

In an environment where several glamorous stars sit on their high horses, Hepburn remained selfless. She was extremely passionate about donating to UNICEF. Hepburn wanted to do all that she could to prevent the deaths of helpless children. She was able to travel to several different locations such as Turkey, South America, Sudan and Somalia to visit children in need and contribute to UNICEF. Hepburn dedicated her time and love to these needy children until the final days of her life in 1993.

“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” Such words can only be spoken by a woman of pure class and wisdom. Audrey Hepburn was the epitome of elegance and class. Exuberating child-like charm and filled with explosive energy, Audrey Hepburn has taught us to live life for its precious moments. She has showed us how to smile not only with our eyes but with our hearts. Her integrity is what made her one of the best. Hepburn did not fake her way to the top, nor did she lose herself in the midst of her success. Not only should we attempt to dress like Audrey Hepburn, but we all should imitate her grace and sophistication.

Excerpt from " You're Such a Fool"- Ntozake Shange

oh you/ you are sucha fool/
you want me to write some more abt you
how you come into me like a rollercoaster in a
dip that swings
leaving me shattered/ glistening/ rich/ screeching
& fully clothed

you set me up to fall into yr dreams
like the sub-Saharan animal i am/ in all this heat
wanting to be still
to be still with you
in the shadows
all those buildings
all those people/ celebrating/ sunlight & love/ you

you are sucha fool/ you spend all day piling up images
locations/ morsels of daydreams/ to give me a poem

just smile/ i'll get it

excerpt from "A Substitute For You"- Nikki G.

You Let me think you loved me
Luckily I can't sue
With work and play we drifted
I'm requesting something new

I'm not saying
This is nice
There's a crack
That love fell through

I'm just saying
What we had is gone

I need a substitute
For you.

Quilts by Nikki Giovanni.
Like a fading piece of cloth I am a failure
No longer do I cover tables filled with food and laughter
My seams are frayed my hems falling my strength no longer able
To hold the hot and cold I wish for those first days
When just woven I could keep water
From seeping through
Repelled stains with the tightness of my weave
 Dazzled the sunlight with my
Reflection I grow old though pleased with my memories
The tasks I can no longer complete
Are balanced by the love of the tasks gone past
I offer no apology only this plea:
When I am frayed and strained and drizzle at the end
Please someone cut a square and put me in a quilt
That I might keep some child warm
And some old person with no one else to talk to
 Will hear my whispers
 And cuddle
 near
